Chapter III
Sealed
Artifacts
✦   ✦   ✦

Sealed Artifacts are objects of extraordinary and dangerous power — vessels through which a Beyonder may wield abilities from a Pathway entirely foreign to their own.

They come about when a Beyonder Characteristic is bound to a suitable vessel, causing the artifact to come about, but not without any downsides

Their powers often correspond to the abilities of specific Sequence levels, granting the wielder strange and terrible gifts. Yet because each artifact is shaped by the circumstances of its making — the vessel used, the environment, the nature of the Characteristic — no two are ever truly alike. All manner of curious and unexpected traits may manifest.

Because they can augment their user with abilities outside their own Sequence and Pathway, Sealed Artifacts are deeply prized — and deeply feared. Some negative effects may stack and compound into something far worse than their parts, making it dangerous to carry several at once.

The greater the power sealed within,
the heavier the burden upon the one who wields it.
V
Forging an Artifact

To create a Sealed Artifact, place a base vessel and a Beyonder Characteristic together in an anvil. The sealing ritual is performed through the anvil's power — no other means of forging is known to work.

The Characteristic provides the abilities that will be sealed within; the vessel provides the form those abilities will take. If you wish to destroy a Sealed Artifact, know that doing so will recover the original Beyonder Characteristic unharmed.

The Risk of Failure

The sealing ritual carries a considerable chance of failure. Should it fail, the base vessel is destroyed outright — consumed by the ritual. The Beyonder Characteristic, however, is returned to you unharmed.

Prepare accordingly, and do not attempt the ritual with vessels you cannot afford to lose.
